After any type of significant medical procedure, there may exist specific things that patients should not engage in. Patients are normally recommended to rest after major or even minor surgery and are sometimes given strict guidelines by which they should abide. Following a treatment such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), this is no different. Discussing which activities should be avoided following IVF with a medical professional is important for patients who would like to get the most out of the procedure. Following the procedure in which the woman's eggs are harvested, fertilized with her partner's or donor sperm and then transferred back to her uterus, the woman or couple must wait to see if the procedure is successful and the woman becomes pregnant. To help the procedure and to ensure the safety of all parties involved, women should avoid certain activities. Discussing the specifics about the recovery period with a fertility specialist is important in increasing the chance of success. For about a week after the procedure, couples should avoid intercourse. The woman's ovaries must heal after the eggs have been harvesting and avoiding intercourse allows this to happen. This also helps to avoid vaginal infection following the procedure. For about two weeks after the procedure, women may be advised to avoid baths. When taking a bath, certain substances may be introduced into the vagina which may cause infection and lead to an unsuccessful procedure or miscarriage. Patients may also be encouraged to avoid any heavy lifting or strenuous activities. Arduous actives such as heavy lifting may strain certain muscles in the abdomen or elsewhere that have been put under stress by the procedure. Women may be advised to participate in light exercises after the procedure, however. Instead of running, women may be encouraged to walk. The day following the procedure, women may be confined to bed rest, only getting out of bed to use the bathroom. Women should discuss their exercise activities and their normal regimen with a medical professional to determine if they should continue exercising in the days or weeks following IVF. For specific information about which activities to avoid following this procedure, women and couples should speak with a medical professional at a fertility clinic in their area. While strict bed rest is not commonly recommended beyond the first day following treatment, women are often advised to take it easy. Those with further questions or concerns should contact a medical professional to have their questions answered and concerns addressed.
