Molds are simple organisms that can be found in every environment and grow on anything organic as long moisture and 0xygen are present. There are molds that grow on carpets, sheetrock materials, insulation, wet building materials, wood, clothing and many foods. Though much mold is visible, there may be mold lurking in your walls that can only be detected by smell or by respiratory irritation. Musty smells, dampness, and aggravated asthma or allergic symptoms are among the indications that you may have a problem.
With all the rain and flooding this Spring, basements that weren't properly dried and treated for microbial growth are starting to develop mold. How do you know if you've got mold and need mold testing or mold remediation ? Here are the top five things to look for:
1. Musty odor 2. Moldy wall - Water stains along the floor or walls 3. Visual black spotting or fuzzy mold growth on porous materials like wood, sheetrock, cardboard boxes, etc. 4. Efflorescence - a condition that produces white or gray ash on the walls 5. Spalling - flaking, peeling, or popping of a wall's surface
If you suspect you have a problem, a mold test should be performed to identify the type and amount of mold spores to see if you need mold removal services because mold might affect allergies, respiratory distress and asthma. All mold removal, whether in a commercial building or in a home's basement or attic, should be performed by qualified, reliable professionals.
If you're concerned about mold in your home or building, contact a mold testing and remediation company to schedule an inspection.
