“Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today.”Thich Nhat Hanh In a recent conversation with a coaching colleague, a very good question was raised. "Why do people wait until it's too late to seek help for their relationships?" Great question I thought. Every relationship has challenges, including the parental as well as the intimate. But why do we normally wait until we are in the fire to yell for help or seek a solution?
We see signs early on, when we start to feel a little heat. When our children are starting to act out in school or in our marriage, there is a clear lack of good communication. We start to smell the smoke when those same children are now talking back and acting out at home too, and in that same marriage, the communication has turned into a daily screaming match. So, we ignore all the warnings that let us know a fire is coming. It is not until we are in that fire that we notice things are out of control and then want to take action.
This month, we are editing the areas of our lives that prevent us from being completely honest about our situations and taking action the moment things get hot. Let's start taking a better hold of our relationships with proactive solutions. Like, having frequent heart to heart conversations with our children about their world. Or contacting a relationship expert when we notice our marriage could be stronger.
But, if you are in the fire now, don't be discouraged. It's never too late to turn your relationship around. If it's worth saving, please seek the relationship help you deserve
