Many people have tinnitus but are totally unaware as to why they have it or where it came from. This can be quite confusing and also frustrating as tinnitus sufferers seek answers to their problem. Let us look at some of the questions you can ask to help find your own tinnitus causes…

Ask yourself:

1. Have you been exposed to loud noise?

One of the commonest tinnitus causes is loud noise. The human ear is actually a very delicate instrument and it is easily damaged by excess noise. Loud noise can occur in the workplace, in crowded places such as bars and clubs, or near airports. In many cases the first indication of damage is that you lose the ability to hear sound in the higher tones. This would mean that when listening to music you would not experience the full range of instruments such as violins or alto saxophones and the music may take on a dullish overall tone. This damage may go unnoticed but later can lead to tinnitus especially if some of the other causes mentioned below also occur.

2. Have you suffered stress or anxiety recently?

It is now well documented that stress and anxiety contribute to the onset of tinnitus in many people. Stress can be a normal part of most people's working day but occasionally the level of this stress may increase significantly without you actually realising. Increased stress levels have been found to cause tinnitus especially in people who have already suffered ear damage due to noise. Think carefully about the past few months to determine whether you have unknowingly been under additional stress and if so seek to find ways of reducing the stress levels.

3. Have you had any sinus or ear infections?

Although ear infections would seem a logical tinnitus cause, and they can be, a less well known cause of tinnitus is actually sinus infections. Using antibiotics or antihistamine treatments can result in temporary tinnitus. This often clears up by itself but in some cases can become more chronic requiring a tinnitus treatment. Think about your recent medical history and see if you have suffered a sinus or ear infection; this may be the tinnitus cause you are seeking.

A very useful first step in tinnitus treatment is identifying the root cause of the tinnitus and asking your self the above questions is an excellent start.
