Setting goals is at the very heart of being a human being. There's no point to living, if we don't set goals forourselves. Goals focus our mind on what's important. They give us significance and something to work towards.

When you have no goal at all, you will seek to escape reality through many of the different options available...whether it's TV, movies, video games, sex, music, work etc. Any of these can be escapes. Any of these can be good. But this isn't the point of the article.

In the same way that most people don't think for themselves to any significant degree, most people don't set goals for their lives based on what they truly want. Instead, they absorb their goals and aspirations from what society tells them theyshoulddo, what their parents, partner, friends or kids say.

The longterm effects of this are regret, confusion, fear, uncertainty, and the stereotypical "midlife crisis" where the person wonders what he's done with his life and how he's missed out on things that he wanted to do. And why would people do this? Why would people accept other people's goals for them, if on some level they know that it won't satisfy them?

Well, to know what you want is hard enough, let alonego after it. To go after what you want presupposes that youknowwhat you want. And to know what you want presupposes that you knowwho you are, and that you think for yourself. In order to know what you want, you have to know what type of thingsyouare actually interested in and what kind of things actually motivate you and why they motivate you...what things you value, what things you don't value and the reasons behind that. It is a great responsibility to face reality and fully think for yourself and form your own independent opinions, beliefs and convictions...especially when you're used to absorbing beliefs from people around you. When you're so used to passing the responsibility of thinking onto other people and maybe even letting people dictate things to you arbitrarily, you've given up on the task of getting to know who you really are and what you reallywant. /? 210510" Tips For Setting Goals For Yourself
