There are people who claim that night face creams are a waste of money which implies that they do not use any skin cream at night. In fact it turns out that they do apply cream at night, but use the same product that they use during the day. So what is the difference between a night face cream and the moisturizer that is sold as day cream? Well there are several and that is what this article is all about.

As you know sleep provides a time of rest when your body has the chance to recuperate after the stresses and strains of the day. Your skin is the body's largest organ and so also needs time to recover from exposure to the elements during the daylight hours.

The main causes of damage to your skin are sunshine and smoking both of which lead to premature aging and fading beauty. Skin care products designed for use during the day usually include a sunscreen so that your face is protected from the sun. Naturally this is not a problem at night and so night face creams do not have this ingredient.

Skin care products for use during the day will include active ingredients which help to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep your skin looking firm and smooth. As we grow older these proteins tend to diminish leading to loss of firmness and the appearance of wrinkles. All the best nightcreams will include these active ingredients as well.

In addition a quality night face cream will include several natural ingredients which all add to the effectiveness of the product. Examples of these are shea butter, avocado oil, manuka honey and babassu oil.

Both avocado oil and manuka honey have properties which increase the amount of collagen in the skin making it look younger and softer. Avocado oil is also an excellent moisturizer and is particularly effective for people with dry skin. Manuka honey contains natural antioxidants which protect against free radicals which can damage the skin if left unchecked.

Babassu oil and shea butter are both natural moisturizers which soften and soothe the skin. Babassu oil which comes from a palm grown in Brazil is especially beneficial for itchy, dry and inflamed skin. Shea butter also helps to reduce scars, blemishes and brown spots on the skin.

This has been a brief introduction to the distinction between a night face cream and a cream designed for use during the day. Although both products share some common ingredients, each has extra elements appropriate to day and night respectively. So if you want the best protection for your skin it makes sense to use a day cream and a night face cream as part of your daily routine.
