As we get older, the features we desire in a mobile phone may change. Many cell phone companies are finding ways to make these phones more "senior-friendly". New ringtones may have been all the rage but now we need a cell phone with a louder ring so it is easier to hear. We'd like a larger keypad and display screen for easier viewing and input of telephone numbers and data. A cell phone that is more comfortable to handle and larger in size is desired. After a brief visit to the local mobile phone store I discovered the new Jitterbug J which boasts a slimmer and lighter design than previous models. It features Bluetooth which allows the use of my wireless headset. One feature of great appeal is the battery that claims a 30% longer life than previous models. Standard features include a panic button that provides one-touch emergency dialing to a neighbor or caregiver. As with most cell phones, it provides a global positioning system (GPS) that may become invaluable should a senior get lost or become unreachable by phone. Its 24/7 call-in feature to a nurse has already shown to be a lifesaver for many users. Additionally, we subscribed to a Complete Care package offering roadside assistance and free replacement of lost or damaged phones. This service has been very helpful to my grandmother who always seems to be misplacing her phone. Once you've decided on your new cell phone and all its snazzy features, check out your local school and public agencies for further assistance. Many organizations have begun offering classes to help seniors make the most of their mobile phone by familiarizing them with the many features offered such as text messaging, voicemail and calendar functions.
