If you suffer from allergies, there are many things you can do around your home to prevent them from flaring up and causing you discomfort. It is important to reduce allergens both inside and outside of your home in order to reduce triggers and experience relief from the often debilitating symptoms of allergies.

The first place to start when tackling allergens in your home is your bedroom because you spend approximately a third of your life there. Encase your pillows, mattress, and box springs in dust-mite proof covers, and wash your pillowcases, covers, and blankets once a week in hot water. Keep your kitchen very clean, and wipe up excess moisture to prevent mold growth. Place garbage in a trash can with an insect-proof lid, and take it out daily. In the bathroom, use an exhaust fan while you take a shower or bath to reduce moisture. Scrub mold from the shower, tub, toilet, and sink regularly.

During warm weather, you can prevent mold growth by keeping your doors and windows closed and using an air conditioner and a dehumidifier to reduce dampness. Additionally, don't allow anyone to smoke in your home, and use a vacuum cleaner with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. Seal cracks and entryways to prevent cockroaches and mice from entering your home. Cockroach and mouse residue can be very irritating to people with allergies.

Install allergen-free, antimicrobial synthetic turf in your backyard. Many people unknowingly suffer from grass allergies, and natural grass is home to multiple allergens and harmful pests. At certain times of the year, many people suffer from debilitating hay fever as a result of the high allergen levels that some species of grass produce. The pollen from grass can cause symptoms such as itchy eyes, headache, runny nose, and insomnia. Dogs can also suffer from grass allergies.

By switching to synthetic turf, you can eliminate most of the allergens in your vicinity and make it easier to breathe. With synthetic turf in your backyard, you can go outside freely and enjoy your yard without fear that doing so will trigger an allergic reaction. Although installing synthetic turf cannot alleviate your allergies completely, it can drastically reduce the amount of allergens in your immediate surroundings and thus provide significant relief. As an added benefit, artificial turf is much easier and far more cost-effective to maintain than natural grass. When you switch to artificial turf, you no longer have to worry about mowing the lawn or applying fertilizer. Instead of spending time working on the lawn all weekend, you can spend some quality time with your kids.
