A tonsil stone, officially known as tonsilloliths is a build up of debris that gets trapped at the back of the mouth in the tonsil crypts. These crypts are small crevasses within the tonsils.

The tonsil stone is made up of calcified mucous, dead cells, food and bacteria. The result is a foul smelling off white formation that becomes trapped and eventually works its way out where it is either swallowed or coughed up into the mouth.

Some people are more prone to getting tonsil stones than others, but it is not something that you are stuck with for life. There are various treatments and remedies available that can remove tonsil stones and help to stop them forming again in the future.

Whilst tonsilloliths does not harm you, it sure is an embarrassing ailment that can often be linked to bad breath problems. Although they can smell when lodged in your tonsils, if you cough up a tonsil stone and break it open, the smell is considerably worse, a bit like rotten eggs or vomit.

When a tonsil stone becomes loose you will feel a small mass at the back of your throat. The urge to bring it up is strong and they are usually easily expelled with a cough or by pushing on the tonsil with a finger or cotton bud.

One of the major causes of tonsilloliths is post nasal drip. This is when mucous from your nose drips down the back of your throat. If you can get rid of post nasal drip then this will go along way towards curing your tonsil stone condition. People who suffer from a white tongue are also more likely to get tonsil stones and bad breath problems.

Young people who suffer from regular tonsil stones may request to have their tonsils out, but as you get older this becomes less of a viable option due to the risks involved. Since tonsilloliths is more common in adults than in children, tonsil removal is not a common treatment option and not one I would personally recommend.

Not eating within an hour or so before going to bed and gargling twice a day with salt water can help to slow down the formation of the stones.

I know tonsil stones (tonsilloliths) are a nuisance and can be really embarrassing at times, especially if you also suffer with bad breath problems. It doesn't have to be this way though because there is an excellent treatment available that will combat both ailments at the same time.

If your oral hygiene is good but you are still having problems then there is a really effective product available that I personally use and highly recommend. It certainly made a difference to my life and was the only treatment that greatly reduced my tonsil stone problem and totally put a stop to my halitosis.

You don't have to suffer with tonsil stone and bad breath problems forever. If you are serious, then there is a solution to your predicament that's worth pursuing.
