College should be a time of self-discovery and experimentation. It can be difficult to feel free to experience everything college life has to offer when you’re in a serious relationship, especially if your significant other lives in another city or state. Breaking up is hard to do, but you won’t regret it. Being in a serious relationship in college is like having a spyder paint ball gun to the head. If you aren’t convinced, the top five reasons to break-up are listed below.

  1. You won’t have time for a relationship. In between classes, paper deadlines, parties and roommate bonding, there simply won’t be much time for you to see your significant other.
  2. You’re too young to be so serious. College is the perfect time to start understanding yourself and what you want out of life. Having a serious boyfriend or girlfriend can make this process a lot harder.
  3. College is the perfect time to experiment sexually. It’s perfectly healthy to get yourself out there and try some new things while you’re in college, but if you’re already locked down in a relationship, you may miss out on some fun and interesting opportunities.
  4. There’s someone better out there for you. This is harsh, but true. Even if you think you’re completely in love with your boyfriend/girlfriend and that you want to spend the rest of your life with him/her, you’re most likely wrong and you’re probably going to breakup relatively soon anyways, so why not just get over the initial heartbreak before college starts.
  5. You’ll grow as a person by allowing yourself to be single. Relationships are comfortable and they make you feel safe, but they also prevent you from exerting your independence and trying new things. You have the whole rest of your life to be in a serious relationship, but you only have right now to be young and completely free from obligation and serious responsibility.
