Having a disability that hinders your day to day life can be difficult, and hard to live with, but thankfully with the advances in modern technology, there are a variety of different ways life can be more convenient for the disabled, making it a lot easier to just simply enjoy life. Many different tools, procedures, and items can assist in the everyday living and mobility of disabled people today, such as wheelchair ramps, disabled parking availability, braille on banking machines and other public facilities, and importantly vehicles for the disabled. Today, more and more people with disabilities can lead the lives of normal everyday people with the help of some smart ingenuity, and the desire to help disabled persons.

Vehicles for the disabled can range from public transportation to specially engineered cars and vans for people who have disabilities that alter their lives. There are even limo services and other luxury style transport services available to the disabled. However, owning and operating a vehicle that is modified to suit the needs of a disabled person, makes living life much easier, and rewarding to the person operating the vehicle. Owning a modified vehicle is like choosing the difference between controlling where you're going, and just being a passenger in life, which is a great accomplished feeling for anyone. Vehicles for the disabled are usually modified from cars that have automatic transmissions, because it is easy to install hand controls to them. There are two different kinds of hand controls, in modified vehicles for disabled use. Permanent hand controls are installed, and never removed, but the vehicle can be drive by anybody, as the hand control is only functioning during voluntary engagement. Portable hand controls can easily be installed and removed from the automatic transmission of the vehicle.

Aside from the permanent and portable hand controls, vehicles that have been modified for disabled people can feature a wide variety of different features and accessories, such as raised roofs and lowered floors for ease of access with wheelchairs. A person could also opt for electronic brake sensors, and wheelchair locking mechanisms for safety, as well as remote control access and wheelchair entry on every side. Most modified disabled vehicles are custom done depending on the needs of the particular person purchasing one, so the possibilities are long and various. There is also constant research going into the development of better vehicles for the disabled, and some countries have even produced prototypes of some interesting disability-friendly transportation devices. Doing a little research, while thinking about buying a modified vehicle, is always a great idea, so you can see what options there are that are available to you. You can even find pre-owned vehicles that have been modified for the disabled, at auctions, estate sales and classified websites. Making the choice to become more self-reliant can be tough without the proper resources, and initiative, but the popularity of the internet has made information more and more accessible by everyday people. Reading a few different websites on disabled vehicles can be the first step in becoming an independent person.
