A leadership development training program is applied every day in the workplace and in front of a wide range of different folks.  It is unavoidable; therefore, that a few of the people we will really like, and then there are some we will not get along with as easily.  Some of these people are going to be leaders and we all know that it imperative that a good leader should have a likeable character.  The other side of the coin is that a successful leader to be equally effective and lack the luxury of the "like" factor by those they lead?
In my findings, a good leader should be many things in varying quantities.  A few examples are:

* Dependable
* Passionate
* Self-reliant
* Determined
* Open-minded and calm
* Investigative
* Steadfast to excellence
* Appreciated

They need to possess the skills to motivate and trust their workforce, effectively communicate the ideas they have well, work effectively with their team and practically with upper management, reassure and stimulate their staff, and above all, lead by example. The leader should have drive, desire and fervor, not only for their responsibilities, but for those who they are responsible for.

So, is itreallynecessary that the leader is liked, or even likable? Or is a leadership position based purely on skill and that the like factor is an added bonus?

There is an old saying around that is from the military.  It goes like this "if you take good care of your troops, they will in turn take care of you."  It is a proven fact that employees who have a leader that allows them to contribute, feel good about their workplace and the leader they have.  If an employee is not comfortable and trusting of their leader, then they will out of human nature, will do the bare minimum required. It is imperative that a leader is respected and able to provide results and communicate effectively with each member of the team to tap in to their personality.

Is it possible to learn all of the qualities needed to be a good leader or is it just within you?  I feel that it is both.  You have to have two qualities to be successful "skill and will".  If you have the will, you can learn the skill of leadership development training .
