To perform basic tasks on your computer such as copying and pasting, one way is to right-click your mouse and choose the button in the context menu.  You could also click “Edit” and then click “Copy” or “Paste.”  But doing it that way is slower.

A faster way is to use shortcut keys.  If you want to copy, simply press Ctrl+C.  Or if you want to cut some text, press Ctrl+X.  Doing it this way will save you a few seconds each time.

You can take it a step further by buying a keyboard that has built-in shortcut keys.  For instance, instead of clicking on an icon to open your web browser, you can simply press the web browser key on your keyboard.  This will save you a few seconds every time you do this.

But saving a few seconds doesn't sound like a lot.  But these tasks are done hundreds or thousands of times throughout your day.  That adds up to a lot of time.  If you do a task 1,000 times with a 3-second time saving each time, that's 50 minutes of time savings.  And if you count the number of times you perform the task throughout the year, you could save hours.

One scenario where you'd want to use shortcut keys could be when you're editing a spreadsheet.  In your spreadsheet, you might be copying and pasting a lot.  Clicking “Edit” and then “Copy” (or “Paste”) every time is quite tedious and slow.  But it's much easier and faster to use shortcut keys Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V.
