We are creatures of impulse, desire, poor long term planning, and all the bad traits companies rely on to make their sale.  But if you've ever made a painful decision to say no to buy something, in exchange for some long term gain, you know what a mature delay in gratification can benefit you.

Opting to save for tuition instead of buying designer jeans is a good example.   So is opting to stick with your crappy-looking but efficient cellular phone, instead of getting a shiny and sleek I-Phone.  You will benefit from a better and healthier life, save a bunch of cash that you could spend more maturely, and avoid some dire health issues from overtaking you by giving up the smoking habit.

If you already have it in your mind, then perhaps you already have an idea of how to give up smoking.  The best way to do it is to fully understand giving it up costs you.   What not taking part in that hip and addictive habit will end you up with, and how much discomfort, for a time, quitting would be physically, emotionally and mentally draining.

The best tool in your arsenal is will power.  The problem is this method requires your soul to understand, to want to stop smoking altogether.  When a drug addict mother-to-be gives up the drugs when her unborn baby begins to show signs of distress, it was will power.  A father goes gambling-sober after his eldest straight-A daughter failed to pay her student loans.  When a newly divorced mother decides to stop partying and spend more time with her son because he needs her that shows will power as well.

We just need to find a reason.  Will power is an amazing thing, and it can get you through the tough times.  No one said it was going to be easy.  And those who try to quit end up relapsing unless they are convinced, to their bones, that they want to quit.  Perhaps you shouldn't want to quit for yourself, rather quit for someone else.  A wife, a father or a son, it does not matter because each of these is a just reason.

Everyone who finally quits smoking is going to have terrible withdrawals, but once that is over they will feel like a brand new person and not need the vice any more.  Different from the person, that emerged from the addiction.  Many times you will make excuses to yourself justifying your habit, but afterward it will be like a bad dream when you learn how to give up smoking.

You have eliminated the excuses when you use your willpower as the method of giving up smoking.    It is one of the most important decisions that you ever made when you stopped smoking.  These reasons you decide to quit are for you, not anyone else, so no matter what anyone else has to say about it.  Like a mathematical fact.  Even if you have whined and made up excuses, there is no good reason not to learn how to give up smoking.

Others will try and show you that you do not have to give up smoking.  The media does what they do from a profit motive, and your friend does not want to lose a smoking pal, but are they really your friend if you don't smoke with them?  You can't let these things stop you from stopping, because you know you have to do it with every piece of your soul.  You don't want to quit, you have to quit.  That there are compelling reasons outside your selfish circle of reasons that demand you to be better than who you are.

So if you want some non-hypocritical reason on how to give up smoking.  That's all it is.  Find your reason.  The methods won't matter as much as long as your will is convinced you have to quit.  This is going to make you a much better person.
