It's sad but true but you’ve got to realise that there isn’t an actual “cure” for snoring. Many people claim that they possess the guaranteed way to cure snoring but before you rush out to get these “cures” as soon as possible, remember this important information – one does not exist. Once you realise this then you’ll know it’s no use throwing away hard earned cash on these types of gimmicks. O.K. so there maybe no genuine cures for snoring but there are definitely ways in which you can learn to control it.

Why do We Snore?

Just under half of all adults snore at least occasionally and about a quarter of these do it every time they fall asleep. This seems to happen more in males and those who are overweight and it can grow worse with age.
Snoring, as you probably already know, is the sound made while someone is asleep caused by the vibration of the soft palate and other surrounding tissues at the back of the mouth, nose and throat. These vibrate when the airway is partially blocked and the sound emanates with every inhalation of breath. The amount of noise which people make is incredibly varied ranging from a slight sucking in of air you’d think a mouse might make to a thunderous roar more suited to a mountain lion but if you or someone close to you suffers from the effects of snoring then it can almost become an obsession to try and stop it.
Airways can become partially blocked when people fall asleep as muscles tend to relax so if the muscle tone is not particularly good in the collapsible part of the airway – that’s where the tongue and throat meet the soft palate and uvula – then you’ll find you’ll start to snore when these parts hit each other and vibrate during breathing. As your muscles don’t relax that much when you’re awake then these parts never get a chance to vibrate against each other and you don’t make the same noises.

How do We Stop It?

If you find that you are a heavy snorer and you think that snoring is ruining your health then obviously you should get it checked out by a professional as long term severe snoring can cause serious health problems not least by the fact that it can continually disrupt your normal sleeping patterns. If, however, you are a light snorer but still long to stop, you may become tempted to try some ‘cure for snoring’ device such as sewing a ball into your pyjamas to stop you sleeping on your back or some sort of gizmo that forces you to reposition your jaw while asleep – one word of advice – DON’T. We already know that there isn’t a real cure for snoring yet there are over 300 patented devices that claim to do this just in America alone. The truth is these will probably just keep you awake and I suppose this justifies the claim that they can stop you snoring!
There are a few ways you can help yourself. Try a healthier lifestyle and drop a few pounds – good food and exercise will also create a better muscle tone. Remember to avoid heavy meals and alcohol a couple of hours before bed and get into a regular sleeping routine. It may even help if you try tilt the top of your bed up by about 10 cm (4 inches) to open up those restricted passages a bit more.
So don’t worry that there isn’t any immediate cure for snoring, with a bit of help you can easily learn ways in which to control it.
