The first thing we have to know is that Islam allows men to have up to four wives but if the bride during the marriage insists to be the only wife for life and the groom agrees, they sign a special agreement and from that moment the man can only dream about having more wives. Anyway, to have four wives is not that simple.

According to the law the man should treat all of his wives equally i.e. psychologically, sexually and financially. Besides, if he wants to marry a second wife, he should take permission from his first wife. Is she refuses to give the permission, he has to prove that his first wife is not able to perform her duties as a wife but that is not easy at all. That is why in Iran there are not many men with more than one wife.

By Muslim tradition, before marriage a man is allowed to see only the face and the hands of the bride. The young lady should be a virgin. If not, she should tell the groom before the marriage. First, the groom's parents come to talk to the bride's parents. By custom, the bride's parents have to buy everything for the house - furniture, refrigerators, carpets etc. If the bride comes from a rich family, her parents can buy even a house or a car. The requirement the groom has to meet is that he must have a job and a place to live. He must also provide a very expensive present for the bride such as real estate, golden coins etc. In case they later get divorced, this present should be given to the bride. Many families live together all their lives without having this problem. But in Iran people believe that by this present the groom demonstrates his serious intentions and desire to spend all his life with the bride.

When the two families agree, the groom gives the bride a ring, perfume, dress or something else. The bride also gives the groom a ring, wedding suit or another expensive thing. The wedding ceremony takes place in a house or a restaurant. During the wedding religious and official traditions are followed. A notary registers the marriage officially and the bride and the groom sign. The wedding ceremony is attended by a Muslim priest called "rogani" as well. But every Muslim knows the words that are to be pronounced in order to become husband and wife. After pronouncing those words, any couple can marry even if there is no priest there.

Islam recommends early marriages. That's why the average age of the couples is 20-21. At least 200, 300 guests attend the wedding. The expenses are paid by the parents of the newly-weds - mostly, the groom's parents. Lately, as in the whole world, in Iran became popular to have a honey moon. Some of the Iranians organize intentionally small weddings in order to spend the money later, during their honey moon. It is also very important to mention that the society in Iran does not encourage divorces.
