Its importance and relevance to almost everyone in the world is same, that it’s a joy ride, a bliss which should be cherished forever, as it unites you to the one you are going to spend the rest of your life with. All over the world, the celebration of marriage and the sanctity that comes with it is done in different ways, and some different traditions are followed.

In India, the wedding is an elaborate affair with people from the whole clan coming to visit the bride and groom. They tie the knot and also present garlands in each other’s necks before actually the solemnizing of the ceremony begins. In that phase, the bride and groom actually take seven successive rounds of the holy fire that is lit to bless them and also take their vows with each other, as they are completing the holy parikrama. The Indian mythology plays a crucial role in the vows of the ceremony and it is only after the lord’s blessings and the parents’ blessings been taken that the couple can be truly united for life.

Sweden has perhaps, the most unique custom and tradition when it comes to marriage and the uniting of two human beings. By the time the marriage is on the verge of conclusion, the bride is wearing not one but three rings in her finger. This is because the first is her engagement ring, which she was wore at the time of her engagement, then comes the wedding ring presented to her by the groom at the time of the ceremony of solemnization, and there is a third ring which is finally put on her finger by the groom. This ring signifies the full circle completion, and is termed as the motherhood ring, which means that in Sweden, people believe that marriage is the right time to start a family, and they inculcate this belief in their customs as well.

Again, yet another peculiar tradition towards marriage is carried out in the country of Philippines, where the whole clan for the bride and groom indulge themselves in a dance called Pandango, which can last for several hours before its completion, and the guests actually start pinning up money to the bride’s gown, so that it pays for the honeymoon that the couple are gong to embark upon.

As we observe the traditions of different countries, one can’t help but feel ecstatic as to the whole ceremony and the euphoria that surrounds the tradition of marriage. May it go on till the end of time!!
