I remember my inquisitive son asking me, ‘what age is hair loss normal?' Of course I automatically answered, ‘when you are about grandpa's age.' Then, he surprises me by asking why I am losing the hair in the middle of my head. I was shocked because first, I had not noticed it and secondly, I was just in my early 30's. This got me really worried as I thought I might have some disease that causes hair to fall out. Before long, I was browsing the internet trying to find the answer to my son's question before panicking further. There are so many people who do not have any information on the normal age for hair loss. Hair loss can occur at any age. Whilst in the womb, the embryo develops a lot of hairs. These hairs are fine and silky-like. After birth, the infant will gradually lose this hair. This should be the first incidence of hair loss in every normal person. Babies become bald at some point as they shed the fine hair. The hair starts to grow back sooner or later. The hair that replaces the one that was shed is coarser and less silky. Losing your hair can be due to the way the cycle of hair growth operates. The cycle has four stages. The first stage is the growing stage. During this stage, the cells of the hair found in the matrix are busy dividing. The more cells that are produced means that your hair will grow longer. This stage can last up to 3 years. This stage is intermixed with another stage. During the second stage, the old hair is shed to make way for the new hairs which are being produced. The new hairs will continue growing as long as the cells are still active. The hair then goes into the regression stage. This is the next stage in the cycle. In this stage, the hairs actually regress and the length of the hair shortens. The last stage there is nothing that will be happening. The hair will be resting. The cycle will start over after the resting stage has been completed. The last stage in the hair growing cycle should last up to a maximum of 3 months. It is normal for about fifty or slightly more hairs to fall out on a daily basis. A chemical signal triggers the start of the cycle. However, there are cases when this signal is not released and the hair remains in this stage. The resting stage has no hair growth, just hair shedding. As more and more hairs are shed, the hair begins to thin. If this continues, loss of hair can lead to the development of patches that are bald. However, if the chemical signal is discharged, there is normal hair growth once more. Hair loss can also be due to genetics. If your parents lost their hair, expect to lose your hair. The common age for hair loss is during adulthood. There is really no defined age for hair loss.
