It is extremely unfortunate when one get into an accident, especially if one is to get injured in the accident. In an accident where machinery, automobiles or heavy objects are involved, the injuries are seldom light. And often the severity of the accident gets compounded because the victim or the people around the victim do not know how to react during the accident. If you are able to act properly to reduce the severity of the accident or injuries, you can often reduce the chances of greater injuries or even death. When you are injured, you will need to tend to yourself as top priority. Even with family getting injured, you should attend to yourself first or else you would not be of much assistance to others. Ceasing any excessive blood flow is one of the most important things you should do otherwise you will begin losing conscious if you lose too much blood. You can control blood flow by putting strong pressure on the major arteries leading to the part of the trauma. You must be calm and then use either your hand to press hard on the artery, for example you will need to press your thigh near to your groin if the wound is below your leg. If the wound is on your forearm, you will need to apply pressure on your biceps area. You can also use a rubber hose or rip a cloth from a shirt as a tourniquet around the arm or thigh. This should reduce the loss of blood temporary. Next you should look at whether there are any imminent hazards around that will need you to vacant immediately, for example a fire. If so, you should look around and see whether anyone needs help and evacuate everyone out of the immediate locality. This quick action will help to increase the survivability rate of everyone involved in the accident. For many victims, their life and death is often determined by the first few moments and if medical attention can also be given, they will likely be able to survive. After getting out of the immediate danger of an accident, you should seek immediate medical help. Even though you may think that you are feeling fine, there could be injuries that are not immediately apparent. In an accident involving fires, you could have inhaled too much smoke while a car accident with another automobile could have resulted in mild concussion, which will only surface symptoms later on. In a serious accident, if no one called an ambulance, you should call. In a minor accident, you should get yourself checked at the hospital so that you are sure of your condition. Once you have taken the above actions, and have either been seen by doctors or are at the hospital, you should then make a police report at the earliest convenient time. You would also want any witnesses to put forward their statement to the police so that your statement is substantiated. This is important so that you can seek compensation if the accident was due to negligence on another party and it will also protect you should someone tries to make unfair claims against you. Of course if there is a dispute, a court will have to hear both sides of the story before making a conclusion. If you need assistance, you can seek the help from an attorney specializing in accidents.
