There is a misconception that when a couple are finding difficult to conceive that the issues it with the woman. This is simply not true.

The truth is that male and female factors equally contribute to the causes of infertility. The latest data tells us that the male and female factors each contribute to one third each of the total causes for infertility. Another 15 percent of infertility is a caused by a combination of male and female factors. For the final 20 percent of cases no cause can be found.

With women there can be many reasons for what causes infertility. These can range from hormonal problems to premature menopause. In order for a woman to conceive she needs to release healthy eggs through ovulation. Failure to do so will results in failure to get pregnant. There are many reasons for the production or release of heathly eggs.

Ovulation is rare if the eggs are immature therefore the chance that these immature eggs can get fertilized becomes almost zero. The most common disorder for this problem is called polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This syndrome is identified by the reduced production of oestrogen and the increased levels of testosterone. Because of these low levels of oestrogen no eggs are produced. What are formed instead are cysts that cover the ovaries. Thus causing of infertility in women. This condition affects 5 million American women.

With men the infertility is most commonly associated with a low sperm count, poor sperm quality or both. These abnormalities with sperm can be down to many factors including birth defect, disease, lifestyle choices or it could be down to chemical exposure.
