Libido in simple words can be defined as sex drive with a clear desire for intercourse. A low libido is one of the major problem men and women are facing today. There may be several reasons behind low libido. This article focuses on the different causes of low libido (both psychological and physical) in men and women.
Psychological causes of low libido can arise due to a number of atmospheric conditions, circumstances, emotions or issues. Major factors influencing libido are depression, distraction, loss of intimate time, loss of privacy, issues of abuse, affair, assault, attraction outside of a relationship, body image perception, childhood abuse, fatigue, lack of attraction in one's partner, lack of interest, performance anxiety, sexual abuse, stress or trauma.
Physical causes of low libido can be determined through medical diagnosis. Medications also play an important role among the causes of low libido. Antidepressants, beta-blockers and hormonal contraception prescriptions, along with certain other medicines, can lead to causes of low libido. A poor diet combined with drinking, smoking and lack of exercise can also affect libido. This unhealthy lifestyle can accelerates the lack of testosterone production.
Zinc deficiency may also play an important role in decreasing libido. Zinc is an essential mineral and is needed for the production of testosterone. Zinc content of the prostate gland and sperm is higher than in any other body tissues and helps regulate prostate fluid. Zinc not only helps produce testosterone, but also helps to maintain semen volume, keeping sperm healthy and regulating sex drive.
