On March 14, many mothers in the UK may be expecting a little sign of affection from their offspring, no matter how large or small. It is, after all, the one day each year where they're made to feel truly appreciated and, if you're thinking about doing something special for your mother this time around, don't worry - it isn't all about grand gestures and spending a lot of cash.

Mother's Day was created to carve out some time for parents who strive tirelessly to bring up their children, often receiving little thanks. To rectify this problem, the day was created so that children could do something to show their gratitude and love to their parents, with Mother's Day occurring in March and Father's Day later on in the year.

You don't need to spend hundreds of pounds on buying mum an extravagant gift this year: making someone feel good about themselves is something that's achieved with a little thought rather than a lot of expense - though a new Ferrari probably wouldn't go amiss! Spoil your mum by pampering her with all of the little things that make someone feel special. Buy her flowers or chocolates, make her breakfast in bed, do something for her you wouldn't normally do and don't forget to give her the most important thing of all - a hug and the words 'I love you'. Whatever else you're planning to treat your mother with, it's likely that the last item on the previous list is one of the things she wants the most.

Of course, that doesn't mean you shouldn't feel free to spoil your mother on this day. There's nothing like going out for a family meal together or treating her to a relaxing session at a day spa so she can forget those day to day worries for a while. Or spending time with her by joining her in one of her favourite activities, whatever it is - from playing board games to rock climbing or adventure sports. Has your mother ever fancied trying skydiving? Today might be the time to give her a chance to experience it for real! Only you will really know what your mum would enjoy the most, but you can always be sure that, no matter what she's into, you can't go wrong with that initial hug and kiss.

If that fails, there's always those flowers and Mother's Day chocolate to fall back on!
