What is Atopic Dermatitis ? Those that are or have been diagnosed with atopic dermatitis will have a skin condition resulting in dry, scaly, and itchy skin. Atopic dermatitis will often have three indicators present – exzema, asthma, and allergies. These three atopic dermatitis indicators do not have to coincide at the same time, but people that have the diagnosis of atopic dermatitis are prone to the three and will have occasional symptoms of them during their lifetime.
Atopic dermatitis can be a life-long condition, but it often occurs in youth ages two and under with most symptoms disappearing above the age of three. Thought to be a genetic condition, atopic dermatitis will have various states of skin scaling, itchiness, and bumps. Skin may also release liquid that is called weeping skin.
Atopic dermatitis is not a contagious disorder and has afflicted millions. An outbreak of the skin disorder can be triggered by pet dander, stress, chemical dyes or perfumes, as well as temperature changes. Shampoos, soaps, and laundry detergents are common factors that could trigger an outbreak.
How is it treated? Prevention is the best form of treatment, and this includes maintaining a high level of moisture on the skin. This can be done through daily moisturizers that have oatmeal, which reduces itching. Another method of prevention is taking short, warm baths. People should wear gentle fabrics to protect the skin.
The first thing to do when a breakout occurs is to apply hydrocortisone creams, often found over-the-counter. Pay attention to the condition, and if it gets worse, then immediately call a doctor. The doctor will generally prescribe a corticosteroid cream to be placed on the affected areas.
If the case is extreme, then the doctor may apply topical immunosuppressant medicines (TIM). TIMs are used as a last resort and with extreme pain due to the possible cancerous side affects.
Brief summary: Atopic dermatitis is break out of the skin that is a triad of allergies, asthma, and eczema. Not all three of these skin disorders will occur simultaneously, people are susceptible to each of them at some point in their life. Patients diagnosed solely with eczema will only have skin flare-ups. This is important to note.
Appearing as dry, scaly, or itchy skin, atopic dermatitis is treatable with oils, moisturizers, and prevention a reaction via dyes in soaps or perfumes. Other forms of treatment are hydrocortisone creams, corticosteroid creams, or oral prescriptions. TIMs may also be suggested and prescribed in extreme cases.
