While pregnancy itching can be uncomfortable, some of the ways to treat it are especially pleasant and relaxing. Treat yourself to an extra nice, fragrant lotion and apply liberally to itchy areas. Make sure the fragrance isn't too strong and that mostly natural ingredients dominate its makeup. Oatmeal and milk baths are very soothing as well. Just be sure not to linger too long in their luxury, because too much soaking, can dry the skin even more.
If you are one of those individuals who have suffered from yeast infection, you would know what I am talking about. Though we know itching is not good and it might do more harm to the affected area, yet we cannot control it at times. Some women develop large patches of itchy bumps along their bellies or a rash along other areas of their skin during pregnancy. Typically this occurs during the last trimester. This condition is called purity urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (or, PUPP). This condition typically pops up first on your stomach, but can spread to other areas of the body including your thighs or arms. While this condition won't harm you or your baby, it does result in severe itching that can be extremely distracting.
What Can You Do?
Before trying to treat vaginal itching with over the counter or home remedies, you should consult your doctor or midwife to rule out the possibility of any STDs. If it is determined that your itching is being caused by a change in your PH level, there are several things you can do to try to relieve the itch.
• Run a bath and add baking soda to it • Make a paste of baking soda and water to put on the itchy areas • Place a cold compress on the itchy area
Preventing Vaginal Itching
There are many things you can try to do to help prevent the vaginal itching from starting or returning during your pregnancy.
• Keep yourself clean and dry • Always wipe from front to back to keep bacteria away from your vagina • Refrain from douching • Use scentless detergents • Wear loose clothing and cotton panties • Take warm baths free of perfumed bubble bath, and use soap for sensitive skin to wash.
What to do about abdominal itchiness during pregnancy:
• Tempting as it may be, don't scratch, which only causes more irritation. • Moisturizer can temporarily curb the itching; apply a gentle one frequently and liberally. • An anti-itch lotion, like the pink calamine lotion your mom put on your chicken pox, works in particularly tough cases. • Vitamin E oil is very healing — great for sore nipples later on, too. • Soak in a gentle oatmeal bath with warm (not hot) water. • Using a humidifier may help keep your skin from drying out, but proceed with caution, as it can also spread germs and trigger allergies if used improperly. Follow the manufacturer's directions about keeping the machine spic and span, and don't run it round the clock.
