I hope to answer the question of what to do when you can't sleep. We'll look at some of the causes of insomnia, and what you can do to change this condition. But first, we'll look at what NOT to do. I feel the worst thing to do when you can't sleep is to take sleeping pills, because not only can they have a lot of side effects, but they also can become very addictive. There are natural cures you should try instead. So, let's answer the question of what to do when you can't sleep. First of all, avoid alcohol, caffeine and nicotine. Ever have a nightcap? It might make you sleepy, but it will actually disrupt the quality of your sleep, causing you to wake up, usually after about five hours. The use of nicotine raises your blood pressure, which makes it more difficult to relax. And as far as caffeine goes, you should avoid it after the mid afternoon hours. Caffeine can stay in your body for anywhere from five to eight hours at a time. For some, the effects can still be felt up to 12 hours later. This goes for all types of drinks with caffeine in them like energy drinks, tea, chocolate and even some soft drinks, not just coffee. Changing what you eat is also a way to figuring out what to do when you can't sleep. Try not to eat a heavy meal a couple of hours before going to bed. Yes, a big meal can make you tired, but the whole digestion process can make it tough to get sleep. Also, being in bed can aggravate heartburn for those who are sensitive to products with tomatoes in them, or food with lots of spices. We've only scratched the surface of what to do when you can't sleep . For a whole list of tips, try the book Stop Insomnia by clicking here
