One of the biggest worries of modern human civilization is money. Wherever you go throughout the world, chances are that all the hustle and bustle that you see each day has something to do with looking for money. There are people who begin their day by going to work as employees. There are people who are their own boss. People working two or even three jobs at the same time are becoming more common these days, as are bosses having two or three companies and multiple businesses.
These factors are part of the reason why our society is becoming more stressed in comparison to our predecessors'. Whatever job that our predecessors used to do during the day – farming, mining and other blue-collar occupations - they never failed to show up at home by sunset. Work remained at the workplace and wasn't brought home – home was a place for the family to relax and spend time together. Communication was less immediate as they had to rely on letters, fixed line telephones and telegraphs. Pollution was low, as was the cost of living. While there was stress in their lives, it was more manageable and less persistent.
In the present day, many of us begin our day very early and end very late. Some of us don't even realize that we are stressed because it's such a common and persistent feeling. We flip through newspapers and read about scandals, murders, theft and corrupted people. Then we work like there's no tomorrow, some of us even spend like there's no tomorrow and end up broke by the end of the day. Things that were once luxuries are now considered necessities. We are often willing to go to great lengths for money because we have been conditioned to believe that money and material possessions can make us happy.
While it is true that money makes the world go ‘round, it is also true that a penny saved is a penny earned. Saving money is essential in preparing ourselves to be able to react to financially stressful situations. Learn to prioritize you spending: is having a new fancy cell phone and a fancy sports car actually a need or a luxury? Ensure that everything you buy is worth the money you spend on it. Plan your monthly expenditures carefully. This way, you can afford to be a bit lavish once in a while because you saved.
