There are many people who are unable to walk around like the majority of people. For whatever reason, whether it was a birth issue, a health issue, or an accident, these people are confined to limited mobility. Many of these people may not even have a wheelchair to get around in. One of the easiest ways to boost someone’s confidence is to increase their independence. An easy way to do this is to increase their wheelchair mobility by purchasing a wheelchair or wheelchair accessories to make their lives easier and more independent.

There are many reasons why having a wheelchair is a good idea. For people who have been confined to a chair since birth or early childhood they probably already own a wheelchair of some kind. However, the field of wheelchair mobility is constantly changing and expanding. There are likely many more mobility options available then there were when the person first got their wheelchair. Ask your doctor about advances in wheelchair capabilities.

For others, such as people suffering from severe diabetes or muscle deterioration diseases, they may be facing the idea of getting a wheelchair for the first time. For these people the idea of a wheelchair may be frightening to them. However, it is important to not let fears take over when it comes to the area of wheelchair mobility. There are numerous styles and functions of wheelchairs that make life easier for anyone with a walking problem.

There are at least two different main categories of wheelchairs. There are wheelchairs that are powered by hand, and there are wheelchairs that are electrically powered. Manually powered wheelchairs work well for temporarily disabled people and for those who have a constant companion. Some disabled persons prefer the manual wheelchairs so that they can take more charge of their lives. The electric wheelchairs work best for people who need more help getting around on their own. These work for people who cannot use their arms, or for those who have to travel a lot in their chairs but must do so alone. There are also wheelchair mobility scooters that work well for elderly people who need a transition between walking and a full wheelchair.

When using a wheelchair fulltime there are certain modifications that must be made in the home. Doorways usually have to be widened to accommodate the large size of wheelchair. Ramps and elevators must be installed to carry the wheelchair from level to level. In some cases a machine also must be installed to help a disabled person into bed or in the shower. All of these modifications are expensive. However, insurance will pay if the modifications are necessary. Check with your insurance provider before purchasing any equipment.

For full wheelchair mobility, modifications must also be made to the car the disabled person rides in. Modifications can be made so that the handicapped person can either be a driver or just a passenger. The most important piece of equipment that needs to be purchased for the car is a ramp to drive the wheelchair up into the car. There are also many other modifications that can be purchased such as a car seat that will raise and lower to help someone get in and out of the car. Not all disabled have these wheelchair mobility issues. Check with your health care provider for the best solution for your unique situation.
