Generally speaking, snoring is just a noise some people make when they sleep. Oh sure, the noise can be tiny or it can be deafening. In fact some people snore so loud they can even wake themselves up. But it’s still just a noise right?

The sound itself is caused by the partial blocking of the throat. Air still goes in and out but the blocking causes the airway to act more like an echo chamber and less like a breathing path. One of the main /?Causes-For-Snoring&id=3230272" causes for snoring is soft throat tissue over-relaxing and covering up the airway. That’s something that happens to all of us from time-to time and to most of us as we get older.

But besides the fact that snoring is irritating to our sleeping partners who may decide to go sleep in the guest bedroom (or worse still, insist that we do), does snoring cause any harm? The answer is a qualified yes.

Constant snoring during the night means we aren’t getting all of the air we need to have a deep and restful sleep. Snorers work a little too hard at breathing during the night to stay easily in the most relaxed state. The end result is not enough rest and thus a little less get-up-and-go. But snoring can be a sign of something even more harmful.

Snoring can be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea which is a serious sleep disorder. A sleep apnea sufferer literally stops breathing during the night and only restarts their breathing when the brain realizes what’s happening and jolts the body into a higher level of wakefulness. As this happens dozens and dozens of times during the night the sleep apnea sufferer cycles into and out of a light sleep and never truly reaches a deep sleep. And in the long-term, there are even greater health consequences.

Sleep apnea sufferers are nearly always tired and usually have trouble focusing during the day. Irritability is another side-effect of sleep apnea. And if left undiagnosed and untreated, sleep apnea can have severe effects on the blood pressure and heart too.

So if you know of just think you may be a moderate to heavy snorer, do yourself a favor and mention it to your doctor. He can help you find out what really goes on while you sleep. And that alone might just help you sleep better.
