When will sleep deprivation kill you? Well, it will not happen right away, but consistent sleep deprivation and insomnia over a period of many years could lead to a shorter life.

If you were to go days without sleep, this would not cause you to die. You would fall asleep before you actually did die. But as I said, there can be long term effects of sleep deprivation that lasts for a long time. Lack of sleep has been known to lead to heart problems, and heart problems can sometimes lead to death.

Now that we have answered the question of "when will sleep deprivation kill you," let us look at what causes sleep deprivation, and how you can get more rest. Not getting enough sleep is often a result of a lifestyle where sleep is not considered important, and therefore put on the back burner so to speak. A major cause of insomnia is drinking beverages with alcohol and caffeine in them. Caffeine makes you wired because it is a stimulant, while alcohol disrupts your sleep and causes you to wake up after about five hours of sleep, even if you were extremely tired when you fell asleep. An inconsistent sleep schedule can also lead to insomnia. Do you stay out late on weekends, and sleep in until a much later time than during the week? Doing things like either reducing your caffeine and alcohol intake, or eliminating them altogether, as well as sleeping at the same time each night could be the key to getting more sleep.
