Eating disorder treatment centers believe that Anorexia is largely a psychological disorder than an eating malady. People who are anorexics think that being reed thin is fashionable, trendy, healthy and desirable by many.   Some psychiatrists believe that those who have low esteem and are low in confidence tend to be anorexic, though there are many others who differ. The other viewpoint in that subsequent conditioning in the mind due to media influence and reading information about reducing weight through fad diets also triggers such a perception. Other contributing factors that are cited include genetic factors, excess stress and peer pressure.

There is a huge difference between the two sexes when it comes to anorexia.  Close to 94 percent of anorexics are females; the disorder is more common among teenage girls and the ones in their early 20s.  Also one has to keep in mind that most cases of anorexia are not reported because it can only be found out when a person ends up with other medical symptoms that are triggered by this disorder.

A girl who is anorexic will for most part of the time, cut food into thin slices or look for excuses to avoid eating. She tends to be more concerned about the calorie content of each type of food, instead of eating it. There are chances of anorexics turning into bulimics, especially if they are forced to eat. When coerced to eat, they may just take laxatives or purge it by puking it out so that they feel relieved that they have not let the food be absorbed into their blood stream.

Anorexics are fans of fad diets and love anything that asks them to eat minimal. They undertake dieting like no other and this manifest in the form of various problems. Some of the symptoms of anorexia include weak bone strength, heart problems, anemia, nausea, electrolyte imbalance, hormonal deficiency, pale skin, dark circles under eyes, forgetfulness, tendency to smoke and drink alcohol etc to beat stress and hunger or thirst.

Eating disorder treatment programs are the best bet to treat anemia.  You may be prescribed inpatient or outpatient form of treatment according to your case.  When required, medications and antidepressants may also be given to treat mental imbalance and depression that happen due to this eating disorder.  More than medication, a huge part of treatment is all about counseling and dietary advice. In a reputed eating disorder treatment rehab, there is a dedicated team of nutritionists and dieticians who will not only tell you about the ill-effects of anorexia but also tell you what kind of diet and lifestyle you should have for optimum health.  In rare but serious cases, the patient may have to be fed intravenously or through tubes because her condition may be very weak.

The treatment that goes on is consistent and lasts for a minimum period of one month. Eating disorder rehab facilities usually involve the family as a part of the treatment according to the ‘Maudsley model of family treatment, a methodology that has been found to be quite successful in treating anorexia patients with the support of their family.  Though open communication, education and motivation, the patient begins to value a healthy life and good balanced diet for a healthy body and mind.
