There are a lot of people who turn to self-medication whenever they get any dental problems. They think that proper dental care is just another unwarranted expense, especially in these hard times. They think of proper dental care as a type of luxury. But the truth is oral health is important regardless if you are rich or poor. But if you can't afford to go to private practice dentists where can you go?
For people who are at the lower end of the financial ladder and who find it hard scrounging up money for food much less a dentist, there are a lot of city dental clinics that are run by the local government and other public organizations. These clinics provide free dental checkups, extractions, minor surgeries, and other vital dental services. You should check the public listings for the city clinic that's nearest you.
You can also check if there are any scheduled free medical camps by your local universities, often medical students volunteer in these camps to help the poor by giving their services for free. There are also medical missions being done by churches, non-profit organizations, and other charitable institutions. Even though they render free services it doesn't mean that they are inferior to the expensive clinics, the volunteer health workers they have are all professionals who will give the same care and attention as if they are being paid.
There are also dental discount plans that are available for people who cannot afford health insurance. These discount plans are pretty popular nowadays because unlike health insurance which has at least a 1 month wait period, these can be used immediately. These can be availed of from any city dental clinic, just present the card whenever you go to the dentist's and they will give you discounts on services and medicine.
In these hard times where money is hard to come by, dental health should still be top priority. Regular checkups and maintenance should always be observed, failure to do so may result in more serious, and more expensive health issues.
