Alcoholism marriage is a serious and difficult social problem, destroying many happy marriage's due to mental, physical abuse, financial problems and lack of physical satisfaction. Alcoholism marriage is one of the major causes of divorce in America and other parts of the world. For the marriage to get affected by alcoholism at least one partner has to be an addict. The definition of an addict is a person who is physically and mentally dependant on alcohol to such an extent that if he does not consume the required amount of the substance on daily basis he gets withdrawal symptoms. The withdrawal symptoms of alcoholism are as severe as the symptoms caused by alcohol addiction.
Alcoholism marriage problems begin with the physical symptoms and mental effects of alcohol changing the personality of the addict, this lead to great disharmony. The mental symptoms cause the person to get angry very fast and act irrationally when under the influence of alcohol. Alcoholism leads to physical and mental abuse causing great pain and suffering in a marriage, only the ones who suffer know the seriousness of the situation.
The physical symptoms are also important in an alcoholism marriage, since it leads to erectile dysfunction and reduced sexual drive there is less physical satisfaction in an alcoholism marriage. When this happens it becomes very difficult for a marriage to remain stable, causing continuous disharmony and fights in the marriage. In addition to this the addict can get any of the many symptoms of alcoholism like liver cirrhosis, pancreatitis, hypertension and heart disease. All these decrease the quality of life and increase your medical expenses.
The worst part happens when work starts getting affected due to the addiction, this happens due to the effects of alcohol on the brain leading to altered sensorium. The persona of the individual is changed permanently, his capacity to analyse situations and react to them completely changes. Forgetfulness and loss of motor skills adds to the misery, all this affects the performance leading eventually to financial problems.
Its like a vicious cycle with one problem leading to another and eventually worsening the root cause namely the drinking. When an alcoholic suffers from a bad marriage, he gets more depressed leading to more drinking. When his work is affected again the same thing occurs with more depression, frustration and more drinking. The physical condition worsen with liver disease giving rise to jaundice, nausea, reduced appetite, malnutrition and finally bleeding or vomiting blood. Initially the changes in the liver can be reduced but as cirrhosis begins all these changes become permanent with no cure. Similarly other systems can get affected causing high blood pressure, increased cholesterol and cardiac disease, the high blood pressure can also cause stroke.
Alcoholism marriages must be dealt with great sensitivity with the right counseling and de-addiction centers, the problem can be solved. It is important to understand that till the person stops drinking the changes in personality cannot be reversed, so the first step is always de-addiction therapy. Arguing with an addict will get you no where since he has lost the power of rational thinking, if we are to get that back we must stop the intake of alcohol.
