Breasts have been a topic of discussion for years with many wondering why women want larger breasts. There are many reasons, some of which are shallow and purely cosmetic but many that go much deeper, right down to the self confidence of a woman.

The size of the breasts a woman will have in her adult years begins to develop during puberty and by the time she has reached her early twenty's the breasts are fully developed. There is a misconception that body fat is a requirement for large breasts so that the more fat there is on the body of a woman the larger her breasts will be. And although body fat does play a small role in breast size, genetics plays a much larger role, which is why thin girls can have large breasts without having implants.

Women seeking to have a breast enlargement are generally healthy, younger and have secondary education, thus a higher socio-economic status. Many of these women are not happy with their appearance and may have suffered years of teasing resulting in low self esteem. Other reasons for choosing to have a breast augmentation include the loss of volume to the breast after a pregnancy, reduction of breast mass after losing weight, a difference in size between the two breasts, breast cancer, and simply not being happy with their small breast size.

Some women complain of difficulty finding clothing that fit properly because of a torso that is not properly proportioned and having a breast enlargement can correct the problem. Other women lack self confidence as a result of small breasts and seek out a breast augmentation to feel better about themselves.

The majority of patients who seek out a breast enlargement are immediately happy with the results. They remain happy at the 2 year mark, as well as the 5 year anniversary. Even women who have had to have surgery again due to complications still remain positive about the experience. Studies indicate an increasing number of women choosing to go back for larger implants within just a few years of the original augmentation.

Implants date back to 1895 when adipose tissue was used to change the shape or size of the breast. In 1889 an attempt to inject paraffin met with fatal results. The early 1900s saw many other substances tried. Some were very radical such as glass balls, ivory, and terylene wool, and formaldehyde polymer sponges. None of which were successful.

The 1950s through to the 1960s saw silicone injections become very popular but these also met with disastrous results with breasts hardening and in some cases the damage was so severe the women had to undergo mastectomies.

Today the implants are not only safe they are very effective leaving the woman with many breast augmentation options relating to the size and shape of the breast. The implant has an outer layer of firm elastic silicone and the inside is either filled with saline which is just salt water or silicone gel. There is less than a 10% chance of leakage and with saline it is simply absorbed within the body causing no ill health problems. The implants should last at least 10 years.

Prior to the surgery the size and shape of the new breasts are discussed with the surgeon. The procedure is very safe however the surgeon will discuss the few possible side effects that occur occasionally such as tenderness, pain, and some swelling for the first few days as well as a burning sensation in the nipple for a month or so until everything has healed up properly. A decision will also be made relating to the incision type. Options include inframammary, periareolar, transaxilary, transabdominoplasty, or transumbilical.

The reason why women want larger breasts is a very personal thing. Whatever the reason, breast augmentation is a safe and effective way to get the exact breasts a woman wants.
