Growing up, little girls have often dreamt of wearing a gown exactly like Auntie Jane's wedding dress: glittering with small diamonds, flowing white, and with a very long train. But, the truth is, they really don't understand the importance of such a dress. For some girls, they have already mapped out in their minds how they want to look like on their wedding day. This would include the gown, the design, the color, the hairstyle, the place, and who are invited and who are not.
All brides want to look their best on the wedding day. But one question that is on the top list of brides is the color of the wedding gown. Tradition dictates that wedding dresses be of white color because that has been the color used in previous years. In addition, white signifies purity – purity in thoughts and in deeds before entering a marriage.
However, in previous decades, white was never the color for bridal gowns. Women used to marry in colors such as brown, black, yellow, pink, and green -- until women saw Queen Victoria wear a white gown on her wedding day to her cousin Albert. Since then, it has been instilled in the minds of all women that the ideal bridal gown color is white or ecru.
In succeeding years, more changes were introduced like shorter hemlines and removal of the traditional lace corsets, use of Sunday's best dresses partnered with long trains, and more. Through all these changes, white further cemented its claim to popularity when it came to bridal gowns.
In these contemporary times, more and more women are slowly deviating from the norm by choosing short dresses instead of long gowns, colored bridal ensembles in place of the traditional white or off-white gown, getting married in beaches and gardens instead of churches. For sure, this will set another fashion trend when it comes to bridal wear.
So, while you still have time, think and plan about THE day. No matter what tradition says or what the current trend is, remember, it's your day – choose according to what will make you happy.
