There’s nothing worse than stained teeth – always covering up your mouth in photos and feeling really self-conscious when you smile. Discolouration has two main causes - staining and ageing. There are several ways you can reduce staining - go easy on the coffee and red wine to start with. Smoking, though, is the worst culprit – if you smoke, it’ll show on your teeth. Proper teeth cleaning (don’t forget to floss!) will keep the worst staining at bay and protect your tooth enamel, but if you add a whitening toothpaste and mouthwash, too, you’ll freshen up and brighten your teeth pretty fast.

As you get older, however careful you are, you will naturally lose some whiteness. This is because your dentine (the layer underneath the enamel) gradually darkens with age and this shows through the enamel.

Once again, good oral hygiene and a regular teeth whitening regime will keep your teeth looking healthier and stain-free, but to take your tooth colour some way back to how it was when you were younger, whitening programmes are the best solutions.

Stains can also penetrate into the upper layers of tooth enamel and will be difficult to remove by the use of whitening toothpaste or mouthwash alone. If you want to do something about this type of stain, then the use of products designed to change the colour of the stain in the enamel is your next step to effective Why teeth stain teeth whitening .

Teeth can be whitened by using either
- Whitening toothpaste
- Over the counter whitening applications
- Professional home whitening kits
- In surgery power whitening
