Once a woman becomes pregnant, her body will start going through some traumatic changes that can provide a lot of stress for her, mentally and physically.  Aside from that, ailments like backaches, morning sickness and sinus problems in pregnancy may also be experienced.  Some of these symptoms could be tolerable; others are not, just like morning sickness.

During pregnancy, the hormone levels of women usually rise and also fall radically, so, this means that sinus problems like headaches and stuffy nose can happen constantly and intensely.  Basically, sinus problems can occur to men and women alike, it is not exactly pointed out why pregnancy affects the intensity of these sinus problem symptoms. However, there are lots of theories presented.  One explanation of sinus problems during pregnancy is the lack of sleep due to excitement and increased stress.

During pregnancy, the women's hormones are usually running wild. Her body is also experiencing a quick pace that has not been experienced ever since childhood.  The mother's internal organs are being squished to be able to accommodate the growing fetus.  The weight gain is also expected during this stage, so all of these rapid changes that are happening to the mother can affect her, in one way or another.

Even a simple activity like lying down to nap or rest can be difficult for the pregnant mother because of the growing size of the fetus.  If the sleeping time of the baby is different from the mother's sleeping time, she will surely have a difficult time sleeping when the baby is very active in her stomach.  Since she was not able to sleep, the night before or achieved that comfortable position, she will normally have headaches that could increase in intensity and frequency.

It is dangerous to take over-the-counter medicines when a woman is pregnant, however, pain relievers like Tylenol and Advil are usually safe, provided you have no preexisting condition that prevents you and as long as you just follow the instructions.  If you are having doubts, you can always consult your physician for this.  It will be very helpful, if you will determine the probable cause of the sinus problems in pregnancy.  If you are just stressed out, you may not take any medication.  However, if the symptoms still persist, despite the medications, you already have to ask your doctor about it, particularly, if you are suffering from illnesses like diabetes and hypertension.  It is not always safe to take over the counter medications if you did not consult your doctor about it.

As they say, "prevention is better than cure," so in order to avoid illness such as this, avoid eating foods that will only trigger sinus problems in pregnancy like chocolates, MSG, cheesy and spicy foods. Stress, depression, dehydration, lack of sleep and hunger can also trigger sinus problems.  Try eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, a well-balanced diet and a positive attitude can prevent sinus problems in pregnancy.

It is a good thing that, sinus problems in pregnancy alleviates or even disappears once the second trimester has been reached.  This is because during the second trimester, the hormones have already stabilized and the body of the woman has already adjusted to the modified chemistry.
