To keep a balanced life it is important to keep track of the things that are important to you. There are so many distractions everyday at work and at home that it is sometimes hard to remember which things are most valuable to you. A good method of keeping this in mind and remembering what your goals are is to write your own mission statement and update this frequently.

Things to write in your mission statement:

- Values you want to uphold like being honest or treating people right

- Things that you want to do in life like taking good care of your children or getting a good education

-  Goals that you want to achieve like getting a better job, learn to speak Spanish or write a novel

After you wrote your mission statement it's important to make an apointment with yourself in your agenda in three months time or so to read and update your mission statement again. I do this regularly and it's funny to see how easy I have forgotten things that I have promised myself to do like not working to hard or having more exercise. Especially at busy and stressfull times I tend to stray from my original mission statement.  But when you want to achieve something you have to stay focused and this is an excellent and easy tool.

You don't have to write a long and complicated document. A simple list will do. For example:

- I find it important to be totally honest with my spouse

- I will do nothing that will disturb my inner peace

- A good salary is important but doing the work I really like is more important

- I will keep on educating myself throughout my life

- I want to learn to speak French in the coming year

- I want to write a novel in the next two years

Just write anything down you like and be positive and realistic. Try this for a while and you will see that your life will become more balanced and you will reach your goals more easily.
