When you are the one that must implement good head lice home remedies or other methods to get rid of lice in your home, take the job seriously and do it right. If you are the one assigned the job of selecting the method or commercial head lice shampoo to get rid of hair lice, think about the toxic chemicals that are in the product and consider whether you want to put that on your child's skin.
It has been stated that the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended the Nix shampoo product as a good treatment for head lice, however you may want to consider that advice carefully before exposing your child's sensitive system to those chemical pesticides.
Based on the way people commonly feel disgust when they learn about a problem with head lice, many parents just want to use the surest, quickest way they can think of to get rid of the nasty little insects. Some parents however, will choose a safer and more responsible path by looking for better alternatives to get rid of the lice - ways that do not put their children's health at risk.
Obviously, you need to get rid of all the lice their existing nits or eggs. If your child has allergic reactions or if you are concerned about using possibly toxic chemicals on your child, then you will be looking for better alternatives.
The most simple and time proven home remedy for getting rid of lice and avoiding the commercial pesticides would include the use of a fine tooth louse comb and manually comb out the lice and their eggs (called nits). This can be a time consuming process that needs to be done every day for several consecutive days. Even for those who use lice shampoo, the tedious process of carefully combing out the nits is still necessary.
Many folks use a common home remedy that uses a substance like mayonnaise, Vaseline or Olive Oil which is applied to the hair in order to smother the lice. By leaving this greasy stuff on overnight using a shower cap to keep the greasy stuff contained, then it is widely reported that this works very well. Although this is a messy process, many experts think that part of the reason this works so well is because when washing, combing and cleaning up the hair afterwards, the process removes the lice and the eggs all at the same time. If you use this method, it is recommended that you rinse the hair with Vinegar afterwards which helps dissolve any residual grease that was used and this also makes it harder for any elusive eggs to stick to the strands of hair.
There is a non-pesticide medication that you might consider using. Check into a medication named Ulesfia. If you were to use this it would require you to ask your doctor about it as it does require a doctor's prescription. When using this product, the hair needs to be saturated with the product and it needs to be left on for ten minutes before being washed out. This product should be applied again in seven days after the first treatment in order to kill any newly hatched lice from eggs that were left after the initial treatment. Ulesfia works basically by suffocating the lice that it comes in contact with.
There are also other home remedies that are effective in getting rid of the head lice. These additional remedies include treatments made from spices, herbs and aromatic or essential oils. The most common of these is probably the tea tree oil treatment but remember that these treatments like other home methods have not all been scientifically proven effective and they also are not regulated by the FDA.
To help prevent future lice problems, do a little research and learn how to recognize adult lice, young lice (which are called nymphs) and lice eggs. Also, it is a good practice to do regular inspections of all children who have frequent interaction with other children. With a little knowledge and careful and regular inspections, you can usually avoid any unnecessary need to treat for lice. Practicing preventative procedure helps you avoid the problem for the future.
If girls wear their hair up and if they put it, both of these things reduce the likelihood of lice being transferred between children. Teach your children about the lice cycle. Lice can only be transferred by direct contact from one person to another. Remember that lice have no wings and they cannot jump.
Teach your children to try and avoid activities that could cause direct contact with each other like climbing on and wrestling with each other. Children should also be taught not to share hair brushes, hats, hair bows, combs, helmets or anything that may have been in direct contact with the hair or scalp of anyone else.
If children will take these preventative steps, the likelihood of another lice attack is minimized. Through education, awareness and good personal interaction habits, you are taking the best preventative steps to avoid having to deal with this lousy problem in the future.
