It is important that we set ourselves goals in life, these can be short term, over a longer period of one to five years and also lifetime goals. It is one thing setting yourself these targets, however it is another thing to actually achieve them. In this article I give advice and tips on how to successfully attain the goals you set. These goals when achieved can help to improve our lives and also helps us to become happier and more self fulfilled.

Write down your goals

It is very easy and a lot of fun to talk about dreams and goals and a great future. Achieving these dreams is not so easy as all wise people know. We need to build our dreams on the solid ground of action rather than the shifting sands of talk. The Red Indians of America know how to summarize great truths in a few choice words.

In the perceptive western, "Broken Arrow", Cochise, the wise Apache chief, scolds the wise American scout, acted by James Stewart:

One of my favorite techniques for achieving goals is to use the word 'anyway' as often as necessary.

If you don't feel like doing something or start doubting whether the activity has any value, do it 'anyway' and then see what the results are later after you have completed the activity.

Some results can be seen or felt almost immediately. You reluctantly go for a walk but feel great as soon as you get home. Other results may take a week or so. You start eating less...

You may or may not have a set of written goals. If you do not, then I strongly urge you to make a written set of goals and clarify what you want to achieve. The title of this article sounds simplistic but it is amazing how often people (including me) sit staring at a problem like mounting paperwork and become so depressed by the thought of all the work to be done that they do nothing and continue in a paralytic state for days and even months!

When we talk about our goals, we use the word "should" a lot. Most of us think it's just an innocent word that helps us get out of boring conversations and confrontations about our bad habits.
